Questions Frequently Asked By Senior Clients

As a senior, am I too old to take on computers at this stage of my life?

The answer really depends upon your interests and whether you have physical disabilities.  If you enjoy reading, communicating with different people, and hearing new perspectives you will find that a computer expands your horizons.  Your computer allows you to participate in many intellectual activities while remaining comfortably at home.  If your mobility and independence become impaired, your computer will expand your reach and your ability to connect with the outside world.

  • Modern computers screens are large and can be set up to display easy to read writing so if you have a visual disability, you can still get information from your computer screen.
  • If you have impaired sight you can purchase a screen reader that will describe what is appearing on your screen.
  • Comfortable headphones can be worn to minimize hearing disabilities.
  • You can purchase keyboards with over sized keys that reduce the difficulty of entering data.

Your computherapist will ensure that your computer is easy to use and suited to your particular needs.

I hear many stories about the dangers of the Internet... why are you encouraging me to go there?

Yes the Internet can be a dangerous place as there are no rules of behaviour that govern the Internet.  Even government agencies in repressive regimes are unsuccessful in regulating this modern day manifestation of the Wild West.  We encourage you to explore the Internet as it offers you the world's largest information resource and melts many global boundaries. The Internet enables you to reach out and connect with other people who share similar experiences even though they may live thousands of miles away.

If you were travelling through the jungles of Africa you would be sceptical if some stranger offered you a 'miracle pill'. We suggest that you exercise a similar level of scepticism on the Internet when offered free products or services. We will teach you simple rules of behaviour and train you in safe surfing habits so that you will enjoy your time exploring the Internet.

Privacy on the Internet is maintained through a combination of unique user-names and passwords.  We urge you to never reveal your personal information to any third party solicitations, especially if you receive questions through unsolicited emails. We have strategies that will minimize the amount of unsolicited spam mail and other undesirable interruptions that can disturb your computing sessions.

We will ensure that you computer has up-to-date safeguards. If you join our support club, we will periodically check the status of your computer through our remote support services and take corrective action.

While we cannot provide you with an absolute guarantee of safety, we can minimize the dangers so that you should have a happy and safe computing experience.

I have difficulty learning new things - how can you help me?

We recognize that increasing age often results in a slowing down of our ability to aborb new information. Our experience with many senior clients is that a patient and consistent approach which links into your specific interests will give you a good chance of learning what you need.  We avoid using 'techno-babble' and take great care to explain the process in a language that makes sense to you.

Our computherapists are mature individuals who have a good chance of relating to your life experiences.  We ensure that our sessions support your interests and pursuits. Our clients are most successful when they get early results from their computherapy sessions. We ensure that all computherapy sessions bring you increased levels of skill and satisfaction.

I dislike using computers because they behave unpredictably and this causes me anxiety

Unhealthy computers sputter, stall and behave irrationally. They are a real pain to work with! An unhealthy computer leads to toxic relationships. You would never take your car on the road if you had no confidence in its ability to successfully get you to your destination. In the same way, you will eventually stop using an unhealthy computer because it leads to a high level of frustration.

A healthy computer works at a high and sustained performance level. It will reproduce the same results, time after time and it never gets bored. A healthy computer is a joy to use.

Once computers start misbehaving, they generally don't fix themselves, they only get worse. Over 70% of computer problems can be fixed by simple software adjustments and procedures. Your computherapist is an expert at identifying the underlying causes of unhealthy computer behavior and fixing the underlying causes.

The bottom line: most computer problems can be fixed.  As a final note, we recommend that you replace your computer every 5 years. We advise you to 'love' your data and processes but treat your computer like a rapidly aging appliance!

My Son/Daughter gave me this computer and now he/she expects me to use it

Many of our clients were given computers by their children who then made an enormous effort to show their parents how to use the computer.  Many times these 'learning sessions' are unproductive and stressful.  The net result is that the parent becomes even more anxious when left alone with the computer.

Sessions with your computherapist will be free of anxiety, in fact most of our clients find the sessions quite entertaining as well as very informative.  Your computherapist will quickly determine your preferred learning style and will customize the lessons to build upon your learning strengths.

Sometimes we find that children have 'offloaded' an older computer to their parents, and these computers may not work reliably.  Your computherapist can quickly assess the health of your used computer and recommend appropriate corrective action.
